Spring fever

When nature awakens and bursts into bloom, it doesn’t just give us humans spring fever - for animals, it's mating season.

The days finally become longer, the light more intense and the sun becomes warmer, activating the hormones that are responsible for mating and nesting – early enough in the year so that little ones are big and strong enough to survive once the next winter rolls around. Over the next few weeks, countless wild animals will welcome their young into the world. With a bit of luck, you might even catch a glimpse of a shy fawn or a little fox family if you keep your eyes out.

Our pets can’t escape the effects of spring, either. This is the time when May kittens are conceived. Outdoor toms disappear for several days at once and return a little thinner, but happy. And even the usually well-behaved Rover can’t hold back as he tries to visit his female friends, who are all in heat. All nature seems to be in a stir.

All this commotion results in kittens, puppies, kits and other baby animals, one cuter than the other. They are all looking for a home, as they can’t stay with their mum forever, but can't be separated from them too early, either. With just one look, these little cuties easily win a place in our hearts, and out homes as well. But even the tiniest and cutest little tiger grows up all too fast, so think carefully before taking one home with you. With dogs, it’s important to find out beforehand which special needs different breeds have. Even when it’s love at first sight, new owners should realise that a dog needs a lot of time and patience. Training and the time required to keep them busy every day is often underestimated.

Every pet requires time and effort, including cleaning their cage, enclosure or litter tray. Small animal, less work? Not so – small animals have to be looked after and kept busy, too. Guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits need an interesting cage with lots to do and plenty of time for playing and cuddling.
