“Where will we go?” Summer is upon us and now's the time for pet owners to ask themselves this same old question, followed by, “What are we going to do with the pet?” How about the idea of a refreshing holiday at home with your pet for a change?

Travelling with a bird or a rodent is a real hassle, but even cats aren't keen on car journeys and strange surroundings. Finding a dog-friendly hotel isn't exactly child's play, and dogs are not particularly popular on many European beaches, either.

So why not make use of your time off by busying yourself with your pet, both in and around your local surroundings? Animals love it enormously when their owners spend some real quality time with them. Boring? No way! There are loads of things you can do – build a run for the rabbit, for instance, try out some playful clicker training with the cat, or investigate new walks with the dog: go on expeditions together into the woods and meadows now that you finally have the time! If the young masters and mistresses like walking, this is the perfect opportunity for longer walks, so the dog is fully exercised instead of being left alone in the house or waiting around in the boarding kennels. It boosts health and the bond between dog and owner at the same time.

Even a cat will enjoy spending some quality time with you during the holidays. Now's the time to try out all those games which daily routine has been putting off for a long time. You can easily build an obstacle course or a scratching board yourself; you don't even need special skills for this. Your cat will be grateful for a few extra hours of cuddling and basking in the glory of your undivided devotion!

Hamsters and other small animals are commonly seen as being "low maintenance" but even they enjoy a change in their surroundings. This free time is ideal for redesigning the interior of your furry friend's cage or setting up a summery outdoor enclosure as an exciting rodent-style landscape.
