When it becomes cold, wet and dark in winter, playtime makes a fantastic change to lazing around at home – plus you sleep twice as well after plenty of running around. Playing between meals and naps is good for the health and wellbeing of both people and cats.
In the wild, cats hunt for three to four, and sometimes up to eleven hours a day. So a bit of rain and sleet shouldn’t stop outdoor cats from roaming, should it? But even they become house cats in winter – no wonder, as their ancestors like the northern African Wildcat are steppe animals that like it warm and dry.
Regular exercise is good for them and keeps them on their toes. Cats prefer to play with other members of their species or “their” people for plenty of attention while they play. One motivation for their play time is maintaining a healthy weight: Actively play with your cat for at least 2 x 30 minutes every day to keep their musculoskeletal system, circulation and metabolism in check.
Hunting and finding rustling mice, dribbling colourful balls through the house, chasing the fast-moving point of a laser pointer, catching the feather pompom on the end of a stick – there are plenty of options and variety is the spice of life! Your Maxi Zoo store has all kinds of toys, including popular games that encourage hunting and intelligence such as where potential prey – or high-quality treats as an alternative – is fished out from cracks or balls and enjoyed. Stalking, sneaking up on, observing and waiting are part of the game as a large part of the hunt takes place in a cat’s head.
Feeding and fitness can also be combined: Cats love to chase after tasty treats, with the reward all part of the game. You can also hide dry food in the house for your cat to track down – behind doors, between pots or under furniture.
Maxi Zoo hopes you have an active and fun, as well as cosy winter!
