Rosellas profile

Rosellas – the quiet birds

Rosellas are at least as well known as the smaller, not so brightly coloured budgerigars. They are perfect for those who like large birds but find parrots too loud, as they are quiet, easy to care for and can be tamed quickly. The experts from Maxi Zoo introduce the Eastern Rosella.

Eastern Rosellas originate from Australia and Tasmania where they live in the savannahs, sparse forests and tree populated pastures. In this habitat, the amazingly colourful birds are as common a sight as the blackbird is here. They develop their exotic character properly when they are away from their homeland living in aviaries and outdoor areas in Europe. They are particularly popular for their quiet voices, the unobtrusiveness of which delights their owners.

Pretty plumage

With their bright red heads, necks, breasts and under-tails, yellow-green bellies, black back feathers with yellow-green edges, light blue feathers in the middle of their wings and their large covert feathers, rosellas bring a splash of colour to European homes. The white cheek patch acts as a “beauty spot” in contrast with the bird’s colourful plumage. As well as the Eastern Rosella subspecies the rosella family also includes the subspecies Gold-Mantled Rosella, which has a dark red head and breast, and the Tasmanian Rosella, which has a larger white cheek patch and a dark red head and breast.

The most popular flat-tailed parakeets

Eastern Rosellas live in swarms. In their natural habitat they live in couples, troops and groups of up to 100 individuals. Their main sources of nutrition are grasses and herbs, fruits and berries and all kinds of other tasty plants also including insects and their larvae. They breed in trees in hollow branches or trunks. Due to their trustfulness and their gentle voices, they are one of the most popular flat-tailed parakeets. Contrary to many other parrots they will only mimic noises, words and voices occasionally.

Although keeping these birds is relatively easy, there are a few things to be aware of. They need spacious living quarters; if you can’t provide them with an aviary you must be able to offer them free flight. Like many Australian parakeets, rosellas don’t just enjoy flying and climbing, they also like to run around, especially when looking for food. If you provide them with a flat dish of untreated garden soil or even a small patch of grass sown with bird seed you will be able to observe this habit. Apart from this, Eastern Rosellas also like parrot food, foxtail millet and chewy sticks. They love to bathe as near to the ground as possible. When it comes to fruit and vegetables, you’ll have to see what your bird likes as they can be very picky. With this sort of care an Eastern Rosella can live to 15 or 20 years and sometimes longer.
