Beagles

Beagle Dogs

Beagles are very happy, gentle and active little dogs. They would make a great new member to any loving family. They love to feel like part of the family so they need a good bit of love and care and plenty of play-time. They also love children, and are energetic but gentle playmates.

The Look of a Beagle

Beagles look a bit like small Foxhound. They are solid, strong and muscular dogs for their size. A typical Beagle has a small, round head with a square-shaped snout and wide nostrils. They have deep brown eyes that define the term puppy eyes, and their characteristic hanging ears are wide and long. Their tails normally stick into the air, but don’t curl over the back. Beagles are widely known for their colourful coat (black, white and tan), and they can come in a variety of colours including red and white, yellow and white or orange and white.

What They Are Like to Live With

Beagles are full to the brim with energy and stamina. They don’t normally get on brilliantly with other dog breeds but love the company of another beagle. A couple of these happy tail-waggers will bring plenty of fun and love into any household.

They are very territorial and will protect their home, but they aren’t aggressive at all. Beagles will bark non-stop at strangers visiting their territory, this makes them excellent little guard dogs.
If you like vocal canines, you’ll love Beagles. They have a loud howl that sounds a bit like gurgling!

Things You Should Know

Beagles need regular exercise to stay healthy, both physically and mentally. You shouldn’t leave a beagle alone for too long. They aren’t the best choice if you live alone and work 9-5, they will get very lonely. Beagles are sometimes known to steal food from the trash, table or anywhere they can find some scraps!
Some Beagles can be stubborn and difficult to train, but they are very intelligent little animals. They love being the centre of attention and of course they love getting treats. Keep in mind that beagles will need a firm but friendly hand to learn the ways of the household.

They have an incredible sense of smell that never stops working. This means that they may pick up a scent and follow it relentlessly, they are adorable little bloodhounds. If you leave your beagle alone in your garden, make sure it is fenced off and during walks, always keep your Beagle on a leash.
A healthy Beagle can live as long as 15 years. Common health problems to look out for include epilepsy, eye problems and dwarfism. Be sure to clean your Beagle’s ears regularly to avoid ear infections.
