Osmosis system in the aquarium: clean water for healthy fish
Water is the most important element in an aquarium. The animals in your tank need clean water to be happy. For some fish types, filtered tap water is sufficient as a basis for life, while others require much purer water to stay healthy. Many fish owners use an osmosis system for the aquarium to offer their fish and other aquarium residents the cleanest possible water.
What is an osmosis system for the aquarium?
An osmosis system for the aquarium cleans the water of 99.9% of harmful substances and impurities. Normal tap water contains up to 30,000 different substances, some of which can be dangerous to fish. These include, for example, viruses, bacteria, fungi or pesticides. Even though these are harmless to us humans, they can harm much smaller living beings such as fish. In addition, the limits for other substances such as nitrate or uranium are laid down in the drinking water for humans and not for fish. Normal water filters in the aquarium usually only clean the water from the animals’ waste products. The water filtered by an osmosis system is known as “osmosis water”. It is as pure as the water from natural springs. Another advantage of the osmosis system for the aquarium is that osmosis water does not contain any limescale and the tank’s glass does not get any unsightly limescale rings.
How does an osmosis system in an aquarium work?
Osmosis systems work according to the principle of reverse osmosis. The untreated water is pressed in the direction of the purified water, i.e. the lower ion concentration. There is a membrane with superfine pores between the raw water and the pure water, which collects residues, hardeners and dissolved substances. The water behind the membrane is the pure osmosis water that flows into the tank.
What osmosis systems are there?
Basically, a distinction is made between countertop and under-counter systems. With the countertop unit you need two water tanks and a power supply. This type of reverse osmosis system for the aquarium has an integrated electric pump that filters the untreated water and releases the purified osmosis water into the second tank. Countertop units are less efficient compared to modern undercounter units and require a lot of space. The undercounter osmosis system for the aquarium can be installed unobtrusively under the sink and is connected directly to the water pipe. Since the normal water pressure is sufficient, this system does not require an electric pump and discharges the waste water directly.
