The substrate is an important part of aquarium equipment, as many animals dig and search for food in the soil. Plants also have to find a secure hold in it and absorb food from the soil with their roots.
Digging fish require a substrate that is not sharp-edged. Floor heating is only recommended for medium-fine to coarser substrates, because no proper water circulation can occur with very fine substrates.
