The best food for your cat

To optimally meet your cat’s food needs, high-quality cat food is recommended. You have a choice between wet feed, dry food and biologically appropriate raw feed (BARF). Which feed is best suited to your cat depends on many factors. This includes the cat’s age, weight and general health status. If your cat suffers from allergies or intolerances, a diet adapted to its special needs is necessary – for example with grain-free or hypoallergenic cat food. As carnivores, cats need a large amount of protein and animal fat, which they get from meat, fish, poultry or egg. They also need the amino acids taurine and arginine, essential fatty acids, vitamin A and niacin. It only takes a very small amount of these nutrients, but they are vital. High-quality cat food contains these ingredients in the right proportions and top quality.
 

The amount of food that your cat requires to meet its daily needs depends on influences such as age, weight, living conditions and the particular breed. Outdoor cats usually have higher nutrient requirements than indoor cats. Generally, in regard to wet cat feed, the higher the quality of the food the more filling it is, so less is needed. The ingredients play a decisive role in dry food as well. If you feed your cat dry food, it is important to always provide sufficient water in an extra bowl. Factors such as the state of health or the age of your cat also influence the frequency of daily feeding. Most cats find it easier to digest smaller portions of food throughout the day, as cats normally eat in stages and divide their meals up themselves, because their digestive tract is not suited to consuming large quantities. In principle, three to four meals per day are recommended for an adult cat and up to five for kittens.

Cats should not eat seasoned or smoked food, raw pork or raw fish, bones, legumes or sweets. For the most part, cats naturally avoid foods that are hard for them to digest. They are cautious and first check thoroughly with their nose before they swallow something. But kittens in particular are at risk. They have to go through important learning processes first, and they may have a tendency to try out unfamiliar food.

Airtight containers such as feed bins are ideal for keeping dry food crunchy and flavourful. The storage location should be dry and cool. Moisture is particularly damaging for cat food – the food can lose its flavour, vitamins and minerals due to incorrect storage. In the worst-case scenario, the food will get mouldy. Sealed tins of wet feed, on the other hand, last much longer. You can store these in any room. After opening, the tin should be placed in the refrigerator and used up within the next two days. Please note: you should take the cat food out of the refrigerator two hours before feeding so that it warms up to room temperature. Food that is too cold can harm the cat’s sensitive stomach.
