Which is better? Dog collar or dog harness? Opinions differ on this. Certainly, there are dog breeds where a harness makes more sense. Nylon collars are dirt-repellent, have a pleasant feel, are comfortable for the dog to wear and are extremely tear-resistant. The increasingly popular biothane collars are impressive due to their dirt and water-repellent properties, are antibacterial and also extremely tear-resistant. Classic leather collars for dogs look classy and are also durable, but like all other leather products they require a certain amount of care.

The size of the collar must fit your dog. Collars are available in a wide range of sizes, so there is a suitable model for small dogs and puppies as well as for larger dogs. When buying a puppy collar, make sure that it is comfortably padded so that your little one can get used to wearing it. Most breeders start the acclimatisation process in the first few weeks of life.

Dog collars with buckles or snap closures are adjustable so that they can be individually adapted. However, you should pay attention to the neck size so that the collar fits your dog correctly. Measure your dog’s neck circumference with a flexible measuring tape. If you don’t have one at hand, you can also use sewing thread and measure the appropriate length afterwards on a ruler. Note that the collar should not be too narrow in relation to the dog so that it does not cut in when the lead is pulled – but also not so wide that it is too heavy and uncomfortable for the animal.
