Pets can suffer from food allergies, too—find out here how to recognize them and how insects can help.

When animals suffer from a food allergy, it manifests as an immune system reaction—for instance, through itching or diarrhoea. A food allergy can develop at any age. Potential triggers (allergens) include protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, dairy products, grains, soy products, or eggs. The specific trigger can be identified through an elimination diet, which should be closely coordinated with and monitored by your veterinarian. Once identified, the food causing the reaction must be completely eliminated from the animal’s diet; it must not even be given as a treat. Fortunately, there are suitable alternative dog foods available today. Ideal options include foods with limited protein sources—or even just a single protein source, such as insect protein.

Insects as a Superfood

Insects are a newly discovered, high-quality source of animal protein for pet food, offering a protein content comparable to that of meat. This makes it possible to completely eliminate meat as an ingredient. Consequently, switching to this type of food may be worth a try if your dog is highly sensitive to conventional pet food. Insects are tasty, highly digestible, and packed with beneficial nutrients. They provide your dog with unsaturated fatty acids, such as Omega-3 and Omega-6 (including linoleic acid). Combined with health-promoting micronutrients like biotin and magnesium, insects also help ensure a shiny coat and healthy skin. The Vitamin B12 they contain—which is essential for various metabolic processes—is also beneficial for your four-legged friend.

Which insects are used in dog food?

The Novel Food Regulation governs which insects may be processed in the EU. It distinguishes between edible insects (for human consumption) and insects used for animal feed.

Feeder insects approved for animal feed include:

  • Black soldier fly
  • House crickets, a type of cricket
  • Mealworms, larvae of the European mealworm beetle
  • Locusts, though their hard chitin shells make processing difficult

Environmentally friendly and sustainable

Compared to other livestock (such as cattle and pigs), keeping and rearing them is significantly more climate-friendly. They do not produce methane gas, which is known to contribute to the greenhouse effect. Furthermore, producing one kilogram of insect protein consumes only a fraction of the water and energy required for beef protein.
