Saltwater aquarium – what you need to know
A saltwater aquarium is more intensive in terms of care than a freshwater aquarium, which is why many beginners steer clear of this attractive aquarium type. With commitment and the willingness to acquire the appropriate knowledge, you can also create a beautiful underwater world with colourful fish and a reef even as a beginner.
What is needed for a saltwater aquarium?
The main difference to the freshwater aquarium is that in a saltwater aquarium, the salt content of the water is higher and the start-up phase, i.e. the time until the first stocking with your tank inhabitants, takes longer. Whereas the options for setting up a saltwater aquarium were limited in the past, there are now a number of technical aids that make aquarium care easier. With a starter package consisting of the actual aquarium, reef sand, sea salt and other minerals, flow pumps, water treatment units, biofilters with protein defoamers and water tests, you can create the foundations for this exciting underwater world.
How do I set up a saltwater aquarium?
After you have created the basic conditions, wait a few days until the water in the saltwater aquarium is clear. Now it’s time for the stones on the reef aquarium. This live rock is the actual filter of the underwater world. Numerous useful bacteria find a home in the pores of these stones. Ideally, the stone lining in the saltwater aquarium consists of 100 percent living rock, but 30 percent is the minimum. After inserting the stones, you should wait two to three weeks before putting the first crabs or corals into the tank. It takes about three months for the aquarium environment to settle in before the first fish can be stocked. However, due to the microorganisms introduced in the living rock and the corals in the saltwater aquarium, some interesting observations can already be made during this time.
How many fish and which ones can I add to my saltwater aquarium?
The opinions about how many fish may be kept in an aquarium are different. There are various calculation options based on the water surface or the total contents of the aquarium in connection with the size of the fish.
