A fauna box is part of the basic set-up of terrariums
A fauna box is part of the basic set-up of terrariums. The boxes, also known as faunariums, are used in many situations as a temporary solution or replacement for reptiles, amphibians, mice, arachnids or insects. For example, a fauna box can serve as a transport box, a quarantine station for sick or injured animals, a container for keeping and/or breeding live foods. Like terrariums, fauna boxes are available in many different sizes.
What is a fauna box?
Fauna boxes from well-known brands such as Exo Terra or Namibia Terra consist of a bottom part made of clear plastic and a cover with a fine grid structure. This ensures good ventilation in the faunarium and young animals cannot slip through. For smaller tasks, the containers have a flap in the cover. If you need more space, you can remove the lid completely. Some models have devices for attaching heat lamps. However, caution is advised here: The temperature rises very quickly in small boxes.
Fauna boxes are also a good solution for feeding your animals individually or for keeping them safe while cleaning or working on the terrarium. The plastic mini-terrariums are also ideal for transport (e.g. to the vet). You can also offer freshly hatched young animals safe and hygienic conditions in a fauna box for a short time.
How does the fauna box function as a feeding box?
In special fauna boxes, you can prevent crickets and other feed insects from escaping. Such models are already equipped with devices for food and water. The tubes in the fauna box not only serve as a hiding place for the insects, they also allow easy and safe removal of the insects to put them in the terrarium as food. Furthermore, you can easily breed live food yourself in fauna boxes.
