Cereals mainly provide carbohydrates and are therefore an excellent source of energy. Apart from that, grains also contain protein and other important nutrients. Dogs, unlike wolves, are very good at digesting starch. However, some dogs cannot tolerate all types of grain – rice, barley or rye work fine, while ingesting wheat may cause intolerance symptoms such as skin changes or digestive disorder in the same dog. Grain-free dog food may be a good option if you don’t know which types of grain your dog is sensitive to. Other carbohydrates such as potatoes or tapioca are usually used in such cases.

Rabbits and guinea pigs need a lot of greens, rich in crude fibres, such as all types of pasture-grown plants (grasses, clovers, dandelions, goutweed, plantain, chickweed, etc.), supplemented by hay. This ensures a healthy digestive tract. In addition to this, they must also be able to chew regularly, ensuring natural tooth wear.
With guinea pigs in particular, ensure that they have enough vitamin C, don’t store fresh food for too long.
