Tropica: a pioneer in aquaristics
The Danish company Tropica, founded in 1970, is particularly known for its aquarium plants. During 50 years of the company’s existence, its founder Holger Windeløve has discovered new underwater plants on excursions all over the world and had them bred for aquaristics. In addition to aquarium plants, the range also includes specialised plant fertiliser and the ideal accessories for plant care.
Underwater plants and everything you need
In recent decades Holger Windeløve has discovered aquatic plants in Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Cuba among other places, and have had them cultivated in the company’s own laboratory. Today the company sells plants in Europe, North America and Asia. However, the headquarters are still in Denmark where the plants are also raised. The use of rainwater and coconut fibres as a culture medium is one of the efforts for sustainable production, which has contributed to Tropica being awarded the MPS (Münchner Projektgruppe für Sozialforschung e.V. [Munich Institute for Social and Sustainability Research]) environmental protection certificate.
Tropica has developed a variety of high-quality aids so that the plants are do well not only during cultivation, but also in their later life in an aquarium. These include special tweezers, which allow the plants to be easily placed in an aquarium and are gentle on their roots. The product range also includes scissors that have been developed for the professional trimming of underwater plants. Plant fertilisers in different dosage forms, different soil base products and CO2 systems complete the portfolio. By the way, Tropica was the first European manufacturer to produce a nano-aquarium – the AquaCube.
Another innovation that has made life easier for many aquarists is a clear traffic light system on the plant packs. The different colours reveal how easy or complicated the care of the respective plant is. Green stands for easy-care plants that are ideal for beginners in the world of aquaristic. For yellow-orange, you should already have a little experience in underwater plant care, and a red sign bears plants that need a lot of attention. In addition, Tropica supports its customers with two different apps, which can accompany the user in the first three months with a newly created aquarium. You can find inspiration for landscapes that you can create in this on the company website.
