In general, there is the assumption that chickens are extremely frugal animals that do not require much space. Indeed, the legal EU standard provides for marginally less than one square meter for ten chickens to scratch around. However, the chicken breed you choose is decisive – because there are considerable differences in size.
If you are keeping chickens in a private or small agricultural environment, you should offer the feathered animals a spacious and comfortable home. This means that the above area should be exceeded if possible. For three medium-sized chickens or five dwarf chickens, you should include one square metre of chicken run, of which the scratching around area should make up a good third. The more generous you are with this area, the better your chickens will feel.
