When you bring your puppy home, the breeder will usually give you a few servings of its usual food which you can then switch to the one of your choice. When choosing what to feed your pup, it is important to choose the right puppy food for its adult size. Different dog foods are formulated to suit the specific growth requirements of large or small breeds. Puppy food is high in vitamins and nutrients that young dogs need in order to grow. Pay attention to the feeding recommendations of the manufacturer. The amount of food you feed your pup also depends on individual factors such as its level of activity, so these recommendations are for guidance only. You should also keep a record of your dog’s weight. That way, your vet will be able to use weight tables to tell you whether it is growing as it should for its breed.
Whether you prefer wet food or dry food is often an individual decision. However, some dog breeds do not tolerate certain types of food. If in doubt, ask your vet.
